The primary school approached ECS for a full design and construct package to provide more play activities for the junior students, specifically with sandplay in mind.
A design was developed to a budget that included items that provided as much play value as possible within the area, and could be used by a number of children at one time.
Set below new shade sails, the sandpit was designed so that therewas opportunity for collaboration and learning through play – via the gantry crane, sieves, sand wheels and chutes that make up the bright sand play module. Open sections of sand areas were left for tunneling and shaping, and a play item that is part rock climbing mound and part cubby house added a different element of play.
Excavated material was retained onsite to form a mound. One side of the mound has a new garden plantings facing the street, creating interest over a different plane. On the other, a set of sensory steps lead to a double mound slide that exits into the sandpit.
New concrete surrounding the sandplay zone doubles as a footpath to connect the north gate entry path, as well as a practical sweeping edge.
